Oh hi! And… we’re back!
Ah, it’s good to be back in the nineties. Back in a world of oversized shirts, coffee and curtain haircuts.
Or maybe not so much… as Chandler has had a haircut in the gap between this series and the last. Despite it only being ten minutes since the last scene.
Fair play to the writer’s though, they neatly avoid this continuity error by not only mentioning Phoebe giving them free cuts between scenes but also getting a whole storyline out it!
We’re left with the first of Monica’s many hair disasters (not so much Demi Moore as Dudley Moore…) although I think the choppy style doesn’t look too bad by today’s standards!
“The One Where I Desperately Need a Haircut”
The Friends™ aren’t the only ones in the need of a haircut at the moment. In the busy-ness of my new business I haven’t had time to have my customary summer shearing. This has left me with floppy Hugh Grant hair which, combined with the ‘Indian Summer’, leaves me panting at my work desk. I even succumbed to tying it up in the dreaded man-bun last week!
I’ve been attempting to get my Real Live Friends to cut it for me (with one suggesting a mullet…). But, unlike in the show, this has yet to come to pass. This is probably for the best. Last time I went to a hairdresser I asked to look like David Beckham in 1996 but ended up looking more like Chandler. I can’t imagine the damage a Real Live Friend would do!
I’m well and truly settled in my new job now. Although am amazed by how much of my thought and time it takes up. Seriously, when do most 9 to 5-ers get their hair cut?!
We had a big work party to celebrate the anniversary of the business the other day. This necessitated me coming in an hour early so that we could “all finish early for the party”. And then having to work straight through to five anyway when things went wrong. I wouldn’t have minded, as the party was excellent, but only having a days notice really put me out of sorts.
I also made the frightening discovery that we’re now “card people” after my David the Science Guy and Rachel Number 1 sent congratulations cards. How the hell did this happen? I never thought I’d end up as a card person. It’s all just a big waste of money, time and trees to me (grumble…).
This is one of the more unsentimental traits I share with my father. But please if you ever want to make me happy on my birthday just say “I didn’t get you a card because I know you don’t like them”. Knowing you know me well means a lot more than £2.50 spend on a corny joke and the destruction of the rainforest.
The crux of this episode (other than Joey’s attitude to sex being explained by the revelation he was abused by his tailor) is Rachel’s disappointment at Ross’s new relationship. But I think we should be happy for Ross for sleeping with a second person! And Julie certainly seems like a better choice than Chandler’s mum.
Our Real Live Friend group has had disappointment for the opposite reason, as sadly Monica Number 2 and their French partner have broken up.
This episode has quite a few memorable Friends™ jokes counterbalancing the tragedy of Rachel’s situation. My own attempts to lighten the mood by joking about the break-up being caused by Brexit went less well... But at least it’s taken the pressure off Joey Number 1 and Chandler Number 2, as we’re now back to having a fairly even split of people in relationships and singles.
Real Live Sitcom Moment:
I witnessed something rather special recently. A marriage proposal!
I was walking down the street when suddenly I heard a shout and turned to see a man kneeling in front of his partner. She said yes and spontaneous applause broke out amongst passers-by who couldn’t quite believe it. I was blown away by the wave of happiness I felt at seeing such a joyful from moment between two people. Even though I didn’t know them. I was very surprised by how much it affected me.
Mostly though I was surprised that someone would propose on the pavement outside a betting shop. Perhaps she’d just won big and he thought it was best to tie her down early?
